SONYA SMITH
The very first to complete the Aerial Track, MFA in Dance from the University of Colorado, she combines a passion for highly physical dancing w/ a quirky theatricality in her performance work both on the ground and in the air, weaving together Contact Improv., bungee & harnesses, lyra, and any variety of invented aerial apparatus for inspiration. Sonya spent a decade studying/dancing in San Francisco w/ Joanna Haigood/Zaccho Dance Theatre, Project Bandaloop,
Jo Kreiter/Flyaway Productions, Keith Hennessy and Terry Sendgraff. In 2013 the Journal of Emerging Dance Scholarship published Ms. Smith's article
on the aesthetics of Aerial Dance. She recently presented research on the potential of Aerial Dance to queer
the performance stage at the conference for the Ass. of Theater in Higher Education.
